Our oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in Avon, IN, was founded in 1976 by Dr. Robert E. Sexton. He moved the practice from downtown Indianapolis to the Avon area in 1981. Dr. Robert J. McDonough joined the practice in 1989, followed by Dr. Charles L. Nelson in 1994, Dr. Kevin T. Stockton in 1996, and Dr Gabriel D. Hostalet in 2005.

In January 1999, the practice moved into its current building in Avon. The building is a state-of-the-art facility with seven surgical operatories, a fully equipped operating room, a recovery room, and three consultation rooms.

What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

By definition, oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical, and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions.

We treat a wide variety of problems that affect the teeth, jaws, mouth and facial areas.

Translated, oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat a wide variety of problems that affect the teeth, jaws, mouth and facial areas. Expertise includes removal of teeth, dental implant surgery, bone graft reconstruction of the jaws, corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery, repair of broken jaws and other facial bones, removal of cyst and tumors that occur in the mouth and jaws, cosmetic surgery of the face and treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

Avon Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is committed to providing patients with the highest quality care covering the entire range of oral and maxillofacial surgical services. Our surgeons and staff are dedicated to putting the patient at ease through open and informative communication.

Our administrative staff has many years of experience and is well versed in matters relating to the complex area of insurance reimbursement.  They will do their best to help the patient understand and maximize her/his insurance benefits.

Our surgical staff members are  certified anesthesia assistants and are well trained in matters related to the types of anesthesia administered during treatment. They are also certifed in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as well as radiology.  All members of the office staff are certified Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation  (CPR) and some staff actually have instructor certificates in this area.

Our surgeons use the latest techniques and equipment and regularly attend continuing education courses to maintain currency and expertise in all areas of the specialty. They are certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as well as  in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) which they renew through training biannually.

The office is equipped with an emergency power system consisting of an electrical power generator fueled with natural gas to ensure uninterrupted function of all equipment and monitors in the event of a power outage.
